Fire destroys bean mill

A fire destroyed several Treasure Valley Seed buildings late Sunday.

At around 11 p.m. Sunday, the Powell Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze. Cody firemen also were dispatched to the fire.

Dozens of passersby lined Coulter Avenue as the bean mill burned, watching as the sky glowed with flames.

There is no word on what caused the fire at this time.

Treasure Valley Seed Company produced dry bean seed at the facility.

Due to the Memorial Day holiday, the Tribune printed an early Tuesday edition on Friday.

  1. I am glad no one was hurt and the seed for this years crop is OK. Looking forward to seeing the new building.

  2. I am glad that large propane tank did not explode! Why wasn't their an evacuation of local homes in case of such an explosion? I am glad noone was hurt or killed.

  3. Does anyone remember the elevator fire about 15 or so years ago, Baker Bean & Feed, thousands of tons of ammonium nitrate, building blazing, people and cars all around watching. This was a MAJOR fire. Trafic was not diverted, people standing close by watching, no evacuation was done. Did we not learn something from this event? Why did the officials not do something? Had the McIntosh Oil Bulk Plant fuel tanks exploded...well you do the math. PlEASE LEARN FROM THIS EVENT...THIS TIME!!!!

There was no ammonium nitrate located in the involved buildings, the propane tank involved vented properly early on as it is designed to do and was continually cooled, traffic was closed on South Fair, South Bent and eastbound Coulter during the height of the fire, McIntosh Oil was notified and their bulk trucks were moved. The fire never threatened the bulk facility as four major apparatus were staged between the fire and the bulk facility.

  6. I lived on South Bent St when Baker Bean & Feed burned (about 1990) and we were indeed evacuated, as well as all the kids from Southside School. Just setting the record straight.

  7. to the first comment....."looking to see the new building" hmmm this sounds suspicious! did they want a new facility? I heard they had problems with "blight" this last harvest...maybe that was the way to get rid of the problem seed....makes you wonder don't it?

    There must be some way to blame Monsanto for it, they do nefarious things like that. I rememeber the beanery fire in 1966 too. I was only five years old but recall it clearly, it was a huge fire. There were fire hoses going everywhere across coulter so traffic was stopped. It was an all night event then too.
